Sachs and other executives from the Wall Street powerhouse
are coming before Congress 10 days after the government accused the firm
of fraud. The Senate panel hearing their testimony Tuesday alleges that
Goldman used a strategy that allowed it profit from the housing
meltdown and reap billions at the expense of clients.

Goldman
executives misled investors in complex mortgage securities that turned
toxic, investigators for the Senate subcommittee say. They point to a
trove of some 2 million e-mails and other Goldman documents obtained in
an 18-month investigation. Excerpts from the documents were released
Monday, a day before the hearing bringing CEO Lloyd Blankfein and the
others before the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.

Blankfein
says in his prepared testimony that Goldman didn't bet against its
clients and can't survive without their trust.

Also appearing
Tuesday: Fabrice Tourre, a Goldman trading executive who, federal
regulators say, marketed an investment designed to lose value. Tourre
who famously called himself in a January 2007 e-mail "The fabulous Fab
... standing in the middle of all these complex, ... exotic trades he
created."

INTEREST RATES

Canadian interest rate announcement April 20/2010. "Don't Buy" warning, saying a problem that occurred during routine
handling tests could lead the SUV to roll over in real-world driving.

In the latest blow to Toyota's reputation,
the magazine said that during a test of the vehicle's performance during
unusual turns, the rear of the vehicle slid until it was nearly
sideways before the electronic stability control system kicked in.

Consumer
Reports said in real-world driving, such a scenario could cause a
rollover accident. As a result, the magazine has given the seven-seat
SUV a "Don't Buy: Safety Risk" label until the problem is fixed.

"In
a real world situation, by that time, the car can hit the curb or the
side of the road and that's the situation where, in a vehicle like that,
it could cause it to roll over," said Gabriel Shenhar, senior auto test
engineer at Consumer Reports, who was one of four testers to experience
the problem.

Consumer Reports said the last vehicle to receive
such a warning was the 2001 Mitsubishi Montero Limited. It said among
the 95 SUVs in its current ratings, no other slid as far as the GX460.

Starting
at about $52,000, the GX460 is a small-volume vehicle for Lexus, Toyota Motor Corp.'s
luxury brand. But the warning represents yet another blow for Toyota's tarnished
reputation for safety following recalls of millions of vehicles for
faulty gas pedals. The GX460 is not covered by the pedal recalls.

Consumer
Reports said the problem occurred during a handling test on its test
track. During the test, the driver approaches a turn unusually fast,
then releases the accelerator pedal to simulate a typical driver's
response. This causes the rear of the vehicle to slide.

In normal
cases, the vehicle's electronic stability control should quickly correct
the loss of control. But Shenhar said in the case of the GX460, the
stability control took too long to adjust, causing a risk of rolling
over.

However, Consumer Reports said it is not aware of any
reports of the vehicle rolling over. The magazine said it tested two
separate vehicles, both of which experienced the problem, but neither

greenback regained some strength against the Canadian dollar and other
currencies, including the euro.

The Canadian dollar was at 99.49 U.S., down 0.39 of a cent, at the close
of trading on Wednesday, falling after starting the morning at parity
with the U.S. dollar.

The loonie has been bolstered in recent months by its relatively strong
economy, while the American greenback has fallen against other
currencies.

forcing firms and individuals to adjust to what many believe will become
a new normal in the relative value of the two currencies.

Boosted by cycle-high prices for oil and commodities, the loonie soared
to within a whisker of parity Monday, reaching as high as 99.87 cents US
before closing at 99.72.

The currency has been flirting with par for more than a month, and
economists believe it is now only a matter of time before the
psychologically important barrier is breached.

Bond prices tend to fall as investors' confidence grows and demand for safe-haven investments wanes.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 3.94 percent from 3.87 percent late Thursday, its highest level since last June and the latest sign of confidence that the U.S. economy is recovering. The yield on the 10-year note is tied to many kinds of consumer loans. The increase could raise borrowing costs for mortgages and other debt.

Chik Quintans, a certified mortgage planner at Atlas Mortgage Inc. in Lynnwood, Wash., said rates have gone up following the jobs report. The rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage Friday was 5.125 percent, up from 4.875 late Thursday. Less than two weeks ago, the rate was about 4.75 percent.

Barclays Capital Research called the increase in hiring by private employers "solid." Other analysts also said the numbers were encouraging, pointing to a higher open when stock trading resumes Monday.

"The bond market seems to have taken it as a very positive number," said Andrew Neale, head of portfolio management at Fogel Neale Partners in New York.

It was an unusual day for investors, with the biggest economic news of the month coming out on a holiday for stock markets in U.S. and Europe.

Stock futures contracts rose in an abbreviated session of electronic trading. U.S. investors will get their first taste of how the upbeat report will drive stocks when trading in Asia begins late Sunday. Dow Jones industrial average futures and Standard & Poor's 500 index futures each rose about 0.3 percent.

The yield on the 10-year note is approaching 4 percent, a level that hasn't been seen since October 2008, just before the financial crisis peaked. The 10-year's yield went as high as 4.09 percent that month, before plummeting as low as 2.06 percent in December 2008 as the credit crisis erupted and investors poured money into bonds as they cut back their exposure to risk.

Friday's trading was the closest the yield has been to 4 percent since June, when it reached 3.96 percent.

The Labor Department said employers added 162,000 jobs in March. Economists had forecast an increase of 190,000 jobs. However, private employers accounted for most of the growth. Some analysts had forecast that temporary government hiring for the 2010 census would play a bigger role.

The dollar rose as confidence increased about the U.S. economy. The ICE Futures US dollar index, which measures the dollar against six currencies, rose 0.6 percent.
